Well, after all the fun of Fat Tuesday yesterday, here’s some mid-week zaniness for you…a story about new ways to figure corporate tax rates! Part of me is in favor of something like this, but another part of me thinks that whatever new rules get created, those with the means will figure out ways to get around them. Is that the definition of cynical?

Big win for UVA over the Hokies last night, while my Missouri Tigers did not fare so well, and now absolutely MUST win at Kansas Saturday to have any hopes of ending up atop the Big 12. I hate all the “who’s in, who’s out, who are the #1 seeds” talk at this stage…it changes daily until the very end of the conference tournaments, so why bother? Highly-ranked Georgetown got blown out last night, and the Big East is not nearly as strong this year as it traditionally is, so what does that mean? The Top 10 is probably the most variable in recent memory heading into March Madness…which is fine by me - gives my Tigers & Hoos more of a chance to go farther this year, right? Came across an interesting article in a search for graduation rates the other night…

in closing, here’s Chris Cornell covering Whitney Houston covering Dolly Parton…

Girl/Boy songs tonight at 6pm, and we’ll start the Workday Wrap Up with a brand-new one from Carolina Chocolate Drops called “Country Girl”

Well, this is not only Valentine’s Day, but in Ghana it’s considered National Chocolate Day too. Seems that the general public there would like that chocolate to be free!

and now for a short Grammy review as I practice for my eventual migration to Twitter and/or Tumblr…had fun following some friends and rock’n'roll stars tweets last night during the broadcast, and was trying to keep up on Facebook too, but then I was watching my computer more than the TV screen! I’ll try and figure it out in time for my trip to a radio conference in San Diego later this week…and there’s always SXSW in Austin next month and Bonnaroo in June!

The good - Adele, Jennifer Hudson (AMAZING Whitney tribute - how was she able to sing so well when she was clearly choked up? Just beautiful…) and LL Cool J

The bad - Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown (two performances AND an award, WHY??)

The ugly - were there really distracting sound issues during Paul McCartney’s sweet new Valentine’s song or was that just my TV? Luckily, they seemed to get sorted out about halfway through…Joe Walsh played the part of Eric Clapton very nicely. And did Dave Grohl not know he would be appearing during the electronic music segment when he gave a speech (that sounded good at the time) about not being perfect and recording with computers? And for those wanting more awards to be given during the telecast, has anybody watched the Golden Globes lately? Oof. The acceptance speeches are either boring or just when they get emotional, they get cut off and ushered off stage. I liked how the Grammys seemed to keep the dumb intro jokes to a minimum between performances and seemed to have way less collaborations than the past couple years. Although now that I think about it, there were lots of duets and tributes and that whole Beach Boys thing was pretty awkward. Gotta keep that cross-generational synergy going so that as many viewers of all ages stay tuned, I suppose! But then Adele and Jennifer Hudson clearly stole the show, in part by simply performing their song, with no frills or guests at all.

Thought Bon Iver’s speech was good too, in all its awkwardness…I think that’s basically what Eddie Vedder was trying to say when Pearl Jam won in the mid-90s and he ticked everyone off by questioning the meaning of the award.

Bruce started off the show with a bang, although he probably could’ve left off the traditional “Is anybody alive out there?” opening salvo, in light of the Whitney news. Nice tribute to Etta James from Ms. Raitt and Ms. Keys. Again, 2 artists, 2 instruments: simple = classy, Grammys! And a great ending too, with Sir Paul flanked by his own 2 guitarists, Joe Walsh, Dave Grohl, AND The Boss for an Abbey Road medley!

All in all, a pretty entertaining 3 1/2 hours…maybe less Kanye and Lady Gaga really IS more?

Workday Wrap Up 2/13/12 (H songs theme)

Ho Hey – The Lumineers
Head On – Jesus & Mary Chain
Hey Tonight – Creedence Clearwater Revival
Heaven (acoustic) – Los Lonely Boys

Hey Hey What Can I Do – Led Zeppelin
Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise – Avett Brothers
Hey Good Lookin’ – Hank Williams
Hoodoo Man Blues – Junior Wells
Helpless (live at The Last Waltz) – Neil Young w/ The Band & Joni Mitchell
Hit the Road Jack – Ray Charles

Hush – Deep Purple
This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody) – Talking Heads (the “home” song)

Then again, she did debut at #2 in the U.S., and #1 in the UK her first week out with Born To Die.

Good suggestions all! Let the record reflect votes for Gotye and Lady Gaga too! Saved mine for last…RHCP have been around for 25+ years now, they’re going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a couple months, and they would be perfectly willing/able to mix in New Orleans guests like The Meters, Galactic and even a Neville Brother or 2 to play off of the setting at the Superdome this time next year…we’ll see!

By the way, this article puts M.I.A.’s antics as part of last night’s halftime show in good context…

Workday Wrap Up 2/6/12 (Future Halftime Show suggestions theme)

M.I.A. – Bad Girls
Beastie Boys – So What’cha Want
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – Paris (Ooh La La) (live Corner Lounge at The Sound version)
David Bowie – Panic in Detroit

Pink Floyd – Run Like Hell
Mute Math – The Nerve
Van Morrison – Wild Night (the requester thought Van w/ B.B. King & Taj Mahal would be cool in New Orleans)
Mumford & Sons – The Cave
Dave Matthews Band – Louisiana Bayou (live 2005 Weekend on the Rocks version w/ Robert Randolph)

The Killers – When You Were Young
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Look Around
